If this early single is any indication, the upcoming album from Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats will be groovy and awesome. What starts out sounding to me like a Black Keys track settles into a slow-roller of a song that just rides out for three-and-half funky minutes. It’s got a great bass-and-drum pulse, which lends it an infectious swagger. The music is an interesting contrast (or complement?) to lyrics that speak of support and belief in the face of loss.
I love this group’s vintage soul sound, but I’d personally love them even more if they thread this sort of groove throughout their new album. Either way, it’s a good sign for a potentially standout 2018 album.
